BROWN, HOUSE REPUBLICANS PUSH ENERGY SOLUTIONS LONG AFTER DEMOCRATS LEAVE TOWN

Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC), long-time supporter of an "all of the above" approach to meeting our nation's energy needs, joined other House Republicans on the House floor this afternoon even after the Democratic leadership had left for August recess they remained to talk about the need to hold a vote on real solutions to high energy prices. On the floor, Brown made the following statement:

"Today the House leaves on its five-week week vacation like we do every year, but this time we have not finished our job. In the past two months, my colleagues and I have made several attempts to hold an up-or-down vote on American-made energy production as part of an ‘all of the above' solution to our energy challenge. This has been denied repeatedly and Democrats continue to defy the will of the overwhelming majority of the American population by refusing to do so.

Again today, the Democratic House leadership is proving they are out of touch with the needs of their constituents, by skipping town for more than a month without a vote to lower gas prices, to increase the supply of American-made energy and to promote energy independence.

I urge the President to call Congress back for an emergency session to address the energy and economic crises that we are facing. We must pass legislation to provide American energy for the American people!"

During the revolt on the floor, the Democratic leadership had turned the House's the microphones and cameras off, leaving only the press and tourists visiting the Capitol the opportunity to hear the calls for action. If not for the reporting by a few members of the press, the events happening on the floor this afternoon would not be fully conveyed.
